Imago Relationship Therapy of Michigan
John Sullivan of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, trained with Harville very early on and became a workshop presenter. In the late 1980s, he crossed the border and presented in the Detroit area, sparking interest for a group of Michigan therapists. Since then, some 70-plus therapists have become Certified Imago Therapists in our state.
In 1992 Carole Kirby and Ellie Payson invited Maya Kollman to present a couple’s weekend workshop. A basic clinical training in 1993 followed. When a number of Imago therapists decided to create an organization to mobilize our region, Imago Relationship Therapy of Michigan (IRTM) was born.
In 1995, eight Michigan Imago therapists trained to become workshop presenters, bringing the grand total in IRTM to 12 workshop presenters and four continuing to become “Keepers.”
Sponsored by IRTM, five training classes totaling approximately 62 therapists, some from as far away as Bend, Oregon, have been or are being trained in Michigan.
Our region has also sponsored many wonderful advanced training opportunities and weekend workshops by visiting presenters such as Maya Kollman, Pat Love, Hedy and Yumi Schleifer, Sunny and Mark Shulkin, Margaret Mason, M. Dorsey Cartwright, and Neil Meili.
In 2000, IRTM hosted the annual Imago International Conference in Dearborn. All who listened to Hal and Sidra Stone and Iyanla Van Zant, and rocked with “The Validations” had a fabulous time.
